Coming up on the 7th straight day of beach volleyball and I have to say, it feels GREAT. It has been a couple years since I have been able to play this consistently or for any extended amount of time. If you have played the game for any length of time you might know this as well, but playing 7 days in a row means having to play with different people. Which brings me into the question, "Why a Blind Draw?"

Some of ya'll do not want to play in the Red White & Blue Bell on Saturday July 22nd BECAUSE it is a Blind Draw tournament. I believe this is the the EXACT reason you should. Too often we get comfortable playing with the same few people and we get stagnant. We become inwardly focused on ourselves and forget this is a team sport. We become comfortable with our select group of people we like to play with. This is fine and dandy in most cases, but I would like to make the argument that comfort is often the enemy of growth & development in beach volleyball (and in life). What better way to test and grow yourself than playing in a tournament with someone you would not ordinarily play with or perhaps get a chance to play with? How well are you going to adapt? No team chemistry? How can you step into being a better teammate? Having to learn and adjust to someone new keeps it fresh and also helps you appreciate playing with your "normal" partner. I do believe it is important to have a regular partner to practice with but on the same hand I believe you have to play with different people to help develop your game.

This sport is a beautiful battle of mind, body, and spirit. This is a case where the parts are not greater than the whole. How are you going to be a better teammate?

See you in the sand,
